Same BTU math, different experience

Both types are sized by the same room BTU load — enter dimensions in either calculator path and match rated capacity to calculated load.

Window units are cheaper upfront and install in an afternoon. Mini-splits cost more but are quieter, more efficient, and do not block a window or leak air around a sash.

Mini-split advantages

  • SEER often 20+ vs 10–12 on basic window units — lower electric bills over time
  • Compressor sits outside — much quieter inside for sleeping and recording
  • Heat pump models heat and cool from one system
  • No lost window — better security and natural light
  • Inverter compressors hold steady temperature without on/off cycling

When a window AC still makes sense

DIY mini-split installs require line-set flaring, vacuum pump, and often a 220V circuit. Window units plug into a standard outlet. These are planning considerations — not professional install advice.

  • Renting — landlord may not allow wall penetrations for line sets
  • Cooling one room for one hot season on a tight budget
  • Temporary cooling while saving for a permanent mini-split
  • Historic windows where exterior condenser placement is restricted

Frequently asked questions

Is a mini-split always more efficient?

Generally yes at equal BTU — higher SEER and no window air leakage. A cheap window unit on a leaky sash can waste more energy than the label suggests.

Can I replace a window AC with a mini-split in the same opening?

Mini-splits need a small wall hole for the line set, not the full window opening. You regain the window; the indoor head mounts high on a wall.

Same BTU rating — same cooling power?

Rated BTU is similar, but mini-splits often deliver rated capacity more consistently because of better airflow design and inverter control.
