Same BTU math, different experience
Both types are sized by the same room BTU load — enter dimensions in either calculator path and match rated capacity to calculated load.
Window units are cheaper upfront and install in an afternoon. Mini-splits cost more but are quieter, more efficient, and do not block a window or leak air around a sash.
Mini-split advantages
- SEER often 20+ vs 10–12 on basic window units — lower electric bills over time
- Compressor sits outside — much quieter inside for sleeping and recording
- Heat pump models heat and cool from one system
- No lost window — better security and natural light
- Inverter compressors hold steady temperature without on/off cycling
When a window AC still makes sense
DIY mini-split installs require line-set flaring, vacuum pump, and often a 220V circuit. Window units plug into a standard outlet. These are planning considerations — not professional install advice.
- Renting — landlord may not allow wall penetrations for line sets
- Cooling one room for one hot season on a tight budget
- Temporary cooling while saving for a permanent mini-split
- Historic windows where exterior condenser placement is restricted
